Seeing the Cliffs of Moher

The Cliffs of Moher have been a location that I’ve wanted to visit since I arrived in Ireland, and finally I was embarking on a trip to experience them. With just a weekend available to us, we had to cram as much as possible into these two days.

We left Dublin in the early morning and arrived at the city of Galway in just over two hours where, after after a pitstop for brunch, we spent some time exploring the town centre, walking along cobblestone streets and its quaint shops. After a while, we got back into our car and continued our journey, taking us to the medieval Dunguaire Castle which sits on the shores of Galway Bay.

Our journey next too us through to the Burren, a unique landscape filled with limestones and rock formations, where we stopped to see the ancient tomb of Poulnabrone Dolmen.

Returning to our car, we soon arrived at the awe-inspiring Cliffs of Moher with its cliffs that drop straight into the ocean below. We spent a bit of time here, walking along the edge and also, looking straight over the edge. In some areas, it became a bit too much and we just had to lie down and then pull ourselves forward, in order to see the dramatic drop right in front of us, it’s quite the experience and very humbling.

The afternoon, we arrived to the charming little village of Doolin where we checked into our accommodation, ‘Paddy’s Doolin’. We spent our night experiencing traditional Irish hospitality in one of the local pubs, with traditional music, a hearty Irish meal and of course a few Guinness’s before settling in for the night.

The next morning, we left Doolin, stopping along the beaches in Galway before continuing our trip along the Connemara, driving along winding country roads and eventually ended up at Lough Aughawoolia with its tranquil waters.

Soon after we arrived at the small town of Clifden, where we stopped for a lunch, trying out local fresh seafood before leaving for our final destination, the Kylemore Abbey & Victorian Walled Garden, located amongst the Connemara. The Abbey itself is a beautiful building and we ensured that we took a number of photos of ourselves in front of it before wandering the gardens before we started our return journey to Dublin.

I had a great weekend and it was good to final experience the amazing Cliffs of Moher and the other sights that the area had to offer, in particular the Burren and Connemara. All in all, this area had a bit of everything, we got scenic landscapes, historic landmarks, and charming towns, what else could you want.
