We’ve found a nice place for some relaxation!
Phu Quoc… after spending some time in the cities of Vietnam, it was now time for some island relaxation!
After Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi it was certainly time for a change of pace and Phu Quoc certainly seem to be able to provide this. From the moment we got off the airplane you could feel the small island vibe coming off the place. We all grabbed a taxi to our hotel and luckily we managed to check in early… on our way to our room, as soon as Xander saw the pool he wanted nothing else but to jump into it.
However, it was time for lunch first so we all went for a nice wander down to the beach which took about 5 minutes. Eventually we made it to the beach and after the obligatory dipping of feets in the ocean, we found a nice restaurant which was situated about 5 metres from the water….. just what we were looking for!
The rest of that day was spent doing as little as possible, relaxing by the pool, grabbing a few massages and just kicking back…
The following morning Suz, Xander, Eloise and I did a small side trip to the local Fish Sauce Factory. As you walk into the show room we saw a few large vats which almost got us thinking about wineries…. however the smell we soon picked up from inside the factory was enough to convince us that it was indeed Fish Sauce and not wine inside them! However the most interesting part about that factory was the large buss of Russian tourists which was there as well… we had no idea Phu Quoc was so big among the Russians but we later noticed that there are English and Cyrillic writings everywhere on menus, shop signs etc…
When we returned to the hotel my mum told us that as it was her birthday that day the hotel had arranged a birthday cake for her which we all shared while we were having some nice Vietnamese Coffees with it.
That night we headed into the main town on the island to visit the Night Market. Besides from all the trinkets that are normally sold to tourists they also have a number of restaurants where they serve a lot of different seafood as per your order. We ordered a few very nice fishes and ended up having a great dinner together…
After dinner we spent a bit of time at the market looking at trinkets and bought Xander a torch which he was thrilled to play with.
The next morning I organised for us all to go for a drive across the island to Bai Sao Beach. We had seen photos and heard about a white beautiful beach… however we had failed to read about the lack of proper roads in order to get there. It was a very bumpy 45min to get there but we made it in the end… While the beach was very nice, the water was very choppy on the day we were there which kind of spoiled the serenity of the place. But, we had a great lunch, my parents enjoyed some time in the ocean and Xander and Eloise were just loved by the staff members of the restaurant who didn’t seem to want to give them back…. free babysitting, not bad 😉
The rest of our time on the island was mostly just spent along the beach, pool, getting massages or just chilling out…
After having a great time together, the time had come for us all to split up as my parents were travelling back home and we were on our way to Cambodia. Originally we had all planned to meet up in Hawaii but this ended up being so much more fun and we can’t wait to do another trip together again. We loved our time in Vietnam and can’t want to come back to not only re-visit some of the places but also to discover what else this great country has to offer….
