Relaxing in Khao Lak!

Thailand

Once more, we’re back in Khao Lak for another Thailand fix….. and this time we brought the kids with us for the first time!

For this trip we decided to try out AirAsia from Australia to see if it would be worth the hassle. And with hassle, we’re talking about the obligatory landing in Kuala Lumpur before catching another flight to Phuket. The first leg of the flight was fine up until the very end when we ended up with one of the kids suffering from travel sickness during landing…. not nice! We spend a few hours at KL before it was time to catch the next flight to Phuket. Once on the ground we made it onto our pre-booked taxi and another 90 or so minutes later we had finally reached our destination, the Sands Khao Lak. All in all, yes the trip was fairly hassle free…. just very long and very late for the kids who were both sleeping the in taxi by the end.

During our first morning we scoped the place out and found where the buffet breakfast was located. Here we also ran into friends from Melbourne, Kate and Adam and their daughters (who we knew were going to be here during our stay).

Over the next couple of days our days started out the same, we got up and had a great buffet breakfast before changing to our swimming gear and letting the kids enjoy all that the resort had to offer in regards to waterpark, river tubing, slide etc.

During the afternoons, we generally tried to do something different in order to explore the area and not be stuck at the resort all the time before returning for more pool time and dinner somewhere in Khao Lak.

We wanted to treat the kids to some activities with Elephants however after a bit of research it turns out that is it ridiculously expensive and we didn’t think the kids would actually want to do the full riding, bathing etc. Eventually we found out about Khao Lak Elephant Home which was perfect for what we wanted and allowed the kids to come up close to an Elephant and feed it which they both loved!

So what else did we get up to? Well, we explored the night markets (during rain and a blackout), we got numerous Thai Massages which we did separately at first however we then realised that we could just bring the kids tablets and they were more than happy play on these (on the free WiFi) whilst we were pampered. I feel that I need to make a mention about the free WiFi that was available everywhere…. it’s everywhere and so much faster than the ‘broadband’ internet we get here in Oz.

We also went to see what the Tsunami Memorial looked like, which to be honest, was a bit cliche and all the “Tsunami Museums” that were near the area were just tacky and didn’t seem right.

In the end, we had a great trip where we combined a good amount of us relaxing whilst the kids played in the waterpark area and then also got a bit of sightseeing and got to experience a few different things…. and I haven’t even mentioned the food either, absolutely wonderfull as always!
