Enjoying the Snow season

For the past couple of years we have been living close to the Victorian Alps, which means that in winter we are right on the door steps of some great snow adventures!

This winter took a while before we saw any snow however once it arrived it came with gusto. There were many times when travellers were stuck on mountains having to wait out snowstorms. Luckily we were lucky enough not to have to deal with the storms…. we just got to enjoy the snow!

As neither Xander or Eloise have started skiing yet (and barely know how to toboggan) we like to do day trips to Mount Buffalo where we don’t have to worry about entrance, resort or hire fees as we already have our own snow chains and toboggans.

Arriving at Dingo Dell is always a great sight, both Xander and Eloise are still mesmerized with all the snow. Once at the snow field the first thing they always do is to grab some snow to throw at mum and dad. Eventually we make it up the hill both Xander and Eloise wants to go down with either mum or dad for a few times before they feel comfortable enough to go down by themselves. We finished our day by building a great little snowman which stood tall for about 9.3 seconds before Xander decided it was time to dismantle it and stepped all over it!

We did a couple of trips to Mount Buffalo and even one trip to Falls Creek just for Tobogganing. The fun part about Falls Creek is that there are two areas for Tobogganing, the normal slope and the one where you need to catch a chair lift up the mountain to get to it. We found out last winter that this is a free lift and both Xander and Eloise love riding the lift (and I’m pretty sure that if we let them choose they would ride this all day long and not worry about the Tobogganing).

Being that it’s the ski season I guess I should mention that I made a few trips (without family) with friends to Falls Creek for some skiing. On all occasions the day started out with heavy cloud cover, at some points so thick that we could barely see where we were going, however each time the clouds clear and leave us with a beautiful clear day!

As we all have different levels of experience with skiing we tend to stay on the beginners or intermediate slopes. However we did decided to try some of the advanced ones and I have to say that some of us liked it less than others (and were happy to make it down alive…. hint it wasn’t me 😉

Either way, in all we really enjoyed out snow season this year and are already looking forward to the next one!
